The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last week announced it had awarded more than $126.6 million to the West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (WESTCARB) and the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), the departments fifth and sixth awards of seven planned large-scale carbon sequestration projects.

These industry partnership are part of the DOE's Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership, a 10-year initiative launched in 2003 to advance the technology to commercialism.

WESTCARB will inject 1 million tons of carbon dioxide into the 7,000-foot-deep San Joaquin Basin over four years from a 50-megawatte zero-emission power plant in Kinberlina, CA.

MRCSP plans to inject about 1 million tons of carbon dioxide in Mount Simon Sandstone, a 3,000-foot-deep geologic formation that stretches from Kentucky through Ohio from an ethanol facility.
