The demand for electricity in America is growing at the same time that the concern for global warming is increasing. This has caused a major dilemma for electric cooperatives in meeting member needs for affordable energy.|

And so all of us need to work together to find ways to produce more energy while keeping electric rates affordable and protecting our environment at the same time. All of us need to ask the following questions concerning any federal legislation that may be proposed concerning electricity:

• How will we meet the future demand for electricity?
• How can we develop technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions?
• How can we help keep electricity affordable?

The answers to these questions are important to every American.

Elected officials need to know that electric cooperatives, and their consumer-owners, stand ready to work with them to develop a plan. That is why Northern Plains Electric Cooperative is part of the Our Energy Our Future campaign, which is a grassroots letter-writing campaign that will share our concerns about a balanced approach to energy and the environment with North Dakota’s Congressional delegation.

Fortunately for us, Senators Conrad and Dorgan and Rep. Pomeroy have always been very supportive of responsible energy development with proper protection of our environment. This is the same message we will be sending with this campaign.
