Meter and Load Management Technician

Purpose
Metering and Load Management Technicians drive the success of the cooperative’s load management and metering initiatives. You will serve as the expert, taking the lead on both the technical hardware and system software components of all deployments. In this dynamic role, you will collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including employees at all levels, members, contractors, and installers, balancing your time effectively between office-based tasks and in-field activities.
Essential Duties
- Installation and maintenance of metering, load management, and communications equipment.
- Tests, services, maintains, and calibrates metering equipment per specifications.
- Field inspections of load management and meter installations.
- Troubleshoot metering and load management equipment.
- Reporting and analyzing data across various systems to drive improvements.
- Utilizing various software platforms to monitor the cooperatives metering and load management systems.
- Coordinate and work with installers, or members to provide guidance on cooperative procedures, policies and rates.
- Investigation of member issues including usage, power quality, distributed energy resources, etc.
- Serves as a subject matter expert for cooperative metering and load management programs.
Qualifications
- Candidates must be self-motivated, detail oriented, organized, with the ability to prioritize both short- and long-term objectives.
- Must be able to work both independently and with others maintaining an emphasis on safe work practices.
- Must have the ability to communicate in a courteous, professional manner when working with the members, contractors and fellow employees.
- Must have a strong troubleshooting skillset.
- Ability to understand technical information and translate it to the application at hand.
- Ability to understand basic electrical theory and interpret wiring schematics.
- Good computer skills, proficient in Windows software with the ability to learn new software as needed.
- Understand use of various measurement tools such as multimeter, power quality testers, meter calibration equipment, etc.
- Knowledge of cellular and power line carrier AMI systems is a plus.
- Knowledge of residential, commercial, farm site and irrigation electrical systems is a plus.
- First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to be certified is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Education / Experience
- Preferred two or more years’ job experience in a related field working with meters, metering practices and/or load management systems.
- Preferred one or more of the following:
- Technical degree in electrical or electronics
- Journeyman or master electrician certification
- Experience in utility industry is a plus.
- Experience using personal computers and learning new software systems is mandatory
- Experience requirements may be adjusted if the appropriate formal education and applicable work experience are demonstrated.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position based in the cooperative’s Carrington office.
- Hours associated with this position are normally 8 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday.
- Additional hours may be required during emergencies or when workload requires.
- Position will require work to be performed both inside and outside under a variety of weather conditions.
- Travel throughout the cooperative’s service territory is required.
- Infrequent overnight travel may be necessary.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Requires frequent lifting up to 50lbs and installing and removing meters, meter bases, instrumentation, and other equipment. Heavier objects lifted with proper equipment following safe lifting practices.
- Occasionally required to twist, lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and handle materials.
- Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manipulation and feeling.
- Occasionally working from ladder or bucket truck.
- Frequently identifying and reading color-coded schematics.
