New Office Facility Approved
On February 24, 2025, the Northern Plains Electric Cooperative Board of Directors voted to approve a $14.5 million project to construct a new office and warehouse facility in Cando. The location of the facility will be on existing cooperative property east of the city. The board of directors spent the last year evaluating options to either remodel the existing Cando office or to construct new. Throughout the facility planning process, it became apparent that a remodel of the existing facility would only be a temporary solution rather than looking at the long-term viability. The existing Cando office was originally constructed in 1930s.
Construction is to begin in May 2025 with an estimated completion date in summer 2026. Members can continue to see updates on the building progress on Northern Plains’ website.
The City of Cando has approved the annexation of the 11.34 acres owned by Northern Plains to allow for use of city water and sewer.
Additional Information
This project will replace a facility that is over 85 years old that will help meet the needs for the Cooperative and its members now and into the future. The existing office is currently located in a residential area within Cando and the property prohibited the ability to expand. Safety has always been a concern with larger utility trucks and equipment deliveries within the residential area.
The new facility will improve operational efficiency as the location will be at the Cooperative’s existing storage yard. The design is practical, but will accommodate the Cooperative’s long-term needs. It will focus on energy efficiency, improve security, enhance member privacy, expand space for both member interactions and accommodate large employee meetings.
Both the Cando and Carrington offices will continue to act as the main office locations for the Northern Plains service territory and members. Geographically, the cooperative is one of the largest cooperatives in the state, covering a 50 to 70 mile-wide area from the Canadian border south to Jamestown.
